Wilson Pass (Hunter - Wills)
A view across to an easy, low (1500m) pass between the Hunter and Wills. Probably the easiest crossing of the main divide in Otago. Except SH6 that is. About 7km upriver from Forbes Hut in the Hunter - tracked to the bushedge but the last 1km is untracked and scrubby to the base of the pass: drop to the river or climb to good tussock faces from tghe end of the track. The Wills is good going: 4km riverbed travel upriver from Wills Hut through gorged sections then 3km good tussock / moraine valley-floor to the pass. As you can see, the pass is grassed, low and easy. Good camping spots exist beside small (very small) tarns 2/3 of the way up the eastern side. Tarns and hollows on the summit also promise good camping if conditions are right.
The photo is taken from the summit of the pass between the Hunter and Sth Huxley above Forbes Hut
