A steep and somewhat nerve-wracking ascent from the Sth Huxley to the pass into the Hunter east of Forbes Hut. I once read that 'judicious scrambling provides access into the head of the Sth Huxley' from the Hunter. Finally got the opportunity to try it out.

The photo is taken from just above 'V notch' pass and looks at the Huxley side of the pass. Coming over V notch gave a good opportunity to spy out a route.

Low section up the obvious scree is easy going. The mid section is the tricky bit - you'll see on a map the contours get very close, and this is on snow tussock which is not the best for grip. Once you get over the lip onto the gentler slopes just below the pass it gets much better - a couple of short scrambles through blufs and you're on good scree all the way to the summit. The descent into the Hunter is a doddle down scree from the north end of the saddle to the valley floor. In the lower valley the south face provides good going though mature beech to the Hunter.
