Moonbeam hut is on a terrace on the TL bank of the Waitaha River 300m above the confluence with Moonbeam Torrent. It is an NZFS six bunker of 1969 vintage. It's in good condition and unlike many of its contemporaries has retained its open fire during the DOC era.

The ridge in the background of the photo is Clearview Spur. There is an old track/route up it through the bush & scrub to the tussock. These tops provide access to the County, Smythe, Scamper Torrent etc.
