Crawford Junction hut Feb 2012
This hut sits near the edge of a low terrace on the TL of the Crawford River and overlooks the confluence with the Kokatahi River. It is a little unusual in that it has weather board cladding. I've been told it dates from the short period when Lands & Survey acted as managers between the NZFS & DOC tenures. When I first visited this area in 1972 this hut didn't exist but a 1950's style NZFS 4 bunk cullers hut was a few metres from the site of the current hut. The two huts coexisted for a number of years before the older hut was pulled down.
The cooking gear in the photo belonged to the DOC bridge team who were working in the area. They had just pulled down the Crawford Junction swingbridge which will not be replaced & had done some minor maintenance on the Kokatahi cableway.
