Hendes Shelter (Historic) Oct 2011

This shelter is on the Roberts Point track above the Waiho River on the way to a viewing platform above the terminus of the Franz Joseph Glacier. This shelter built in 1907 was originally a smithy used to manufacture wrought iron work which was anchored into a cliff face to support a gallery over which the track passed. Once no longer a smithy the building was used as a hut/shelter.
Hendes Shelter has a dirt floor, open fire place & two wooden benches/sleeping platforms. It has no windows. There is a lot of graffitti inside. The oldest date I noted was 1915. The names of some prominent alpinists of yesteryear are there.
