Inside view. Hot embers have fallen through the fire grid and pre-heat incoming air that goes over them (in my theory at least). The fire grid is on the level between air intake door and wood loading door. Air then goes up through the fire grid to the hot burning wood. There are a few pieces of wood on top of everything that I just put in; about twice as thick as a thumb.
