  • Bronwyn Hayward great to see the John Hayward/kowhai hut photos up- we are living here in the Uk at present but look forward to coming back to NZ -ha I was laughing those were the days pre mobile phones and the internet when in order to do a PhD on high country erosion you first had to lay miles of telephone poles and wires to send back data to a computer at Lincoln the size of a house...build a road, and a hut, and a flume to measure peak flooding, and THEN start the study..took us kids years to discover that normal families did not go on holiday in major storm events- but while John and the guys were all working on their research we kids had a great time exploring the hills! I think you have to seek landwner permission to use the hut these days- they maintain it and give access and it was their support that let the whole major flood control management project happen.
