This photo of Serpentine hut was taken summer time 1977 by friend & sometimes tramping companion Neil Bradley.

The access route used was the old track up the TR of the Hokitika from the Hoki - Whitcombe junction. Even back then this track was becoming problematic because of slips & regrowth on the track. This route to Serpentine Hut received very little or no use from 1981 until late 2014 when Andrew Buglass from the "Permolat Group" & a few helpers started reopening the route finishing it in early 2015. Even with marking and some cutting done this route is still challenging.

The hut received a makeover in February 2015 by the "Permolat Group." It is no longer in the neglected state it was in for so long!

  • glennj glennj There were at least three other central Westland huts built of similar design to this one! The guys in the photo are Warren Godfrey (left) & Kelly Wilson (right). They are still in the Hokitika area and still get out & about a bit. Warren was one of the volunteers involved with the new Mt Brown Hut. I caught up with Kelly on Saturday when we were part of a group out mountain biking.

  • bmackz An interesting photo for me, as I'm making a study of huts and NZFS ones in particular. This one appears FS construction but with an unusual plan, door in the side and fire at the end, also appears to have wider eave to protect the entry and a coat rack outside! Couple of lithe keen looking young trampers, those were the days.
