"Old" hut at Coppermine Creek May 2009

"Old" hut at Coppermine Creek May 2009

This hut is on private farmland adjacent the Cattle Track and appears to be derelict.

I've been told this was called the "Cattlemen's" hut as it was one of the huts used by the drovers taking mobs over the Cattle Track. Close to this hut on the other side of the track is a somewhat modified hut that was once lived in by Joe Driscoll the roadman who looked after the southern section of the track. Joe, who is one of NZ's folk heros, receives a mention in Mark Pickering's book "Huts" but the book doesn't pick up on that these huts are still in existence.
