Blue River (aka Blowfly) hut May 2009

Blue River (aka Blowfly) hut May 2009

This hut is on the TL of the Moeraki (Blue) River and is the northern most hut on the Cattle Track tramp. This track was made obsolete for droving in 1961 after 86 years of use by the early stages of "Haast Highway" construction. The track & huts after a period of neglect were tidied up & opened for recreational use in 1981.

The "Blowfly hut" name comes from the cattle droving days. Stock were corralled near the hut & hence there was was plenty of excrement to attract flies which were a problem in summer conditions.
