Perched at 1400m on the side of the Hikurangi Range in the northern Ruahines, McKinnon Hut is a 1960's 6 bunk hut in a stunning setting. It is in very good condition with new insulation and lining, mattresses, and woodburner. Extensive views including the central volcanoes. McKinnon can be included in a 3 day circuit including Purity Hut to the south. The route between huts is unmarked and careful navagation is required in clag as side spurs are extremely easy to mistake for the main ridge. Allow at least 7 hours between huts.
