The well-formed track starts with a gentle zig-zag to reach the giant totara tree after only a few minutes. This is one of the best preserved patches of forest left on Banks Peninsula and you'll see a generous stand of rangiora near here.
The track climbs steadily passing through clearings from time to time with fine views of Onawe Peninula and Akaroa Harbour. As the track approaches the ridge top it becomes more rocky. It emerges into the open where some large fallen trees provide a great seat for a rest stop.
The track continues along 4wd tracks through farmland and bushy reserves for another hour or so until just under the summit of Mt Sinclair. You can continues on to Mt Fitzgerald, and the Port Levy Saddle or find your way to the top of Mt Sinclair for a great lunch spot and some magnificent views.
