Looking across Porters Pass in the Canterbury high country. Kowai Forest is a very accessible point from which to explore the area south of the highway below. Ben More is 1655m and the highest point in the Big Ben Range. I'm standing on Foggy Pk(1741m), as part of the Torlesse Range.

  • Ancient Tramper Always surprising how high these 'foothills' are. Probably because you get such a great start climbing from Porters Pass at 949m! Porters Pass is actually higher than Arthurs Pass, 920m. Castle Hill Peak, about 3 km north from Foggy Peak, is the highest point of the range. At a respectable 1998m it is not much below the Craigieburn tops.
