• clive.s Aah, I had a hunch on the tunnel vent - glad to have it confirmed. I'd really love (trainspotter alert) a tell all show all graphic history of the central plateau power systems! I'm fascinated... This tunnel goes to that and this water system goes here, this is a tailrace and than is a canal and... My oh my. Didn't make it up - were a bit late getting down to there... Also put off by the sheer amount of snow and water damage in that valley! Crickey. But heading down in the New Year and I'll definitely hit that hill.

• pmcke I can tell tou exactly what it is. It is at NZMG 2751582,6214431 which is directly over top of the tunnel going from Lake Moawhango to Rangipo. It is a vent of some sort. When I first went there it was only a small thing beside the track. However the river has eroded it and now it is exposed in all its glory
