The new Tarn Ridge Hut was built in 1993 (I remember seeing it fly past Holdsworth under a helicopter) as a memorial to Basil Blatchford. Basil, an experienced deer hunter, set out from Te Matawai Hut for a hut on Dorset Ridgein 1959. Although he was warned not to make the trip in "atrocious conditions" he set out anyway and made it as far as Tarn Ridge where he is now buried.
