Sam-E's 2005 article in related information gives an excellent account of this trip except that we didn't find the book about Sam Leitch in the hut that he refers to.
Also there is now no track junction at the saddle. The northern track has been closed to protect the native frogs. The junction has been allowed to grow over and a sign requests that you do not go there.
