• pmcke The route I described here http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3106 is probably the best way. The only real alternatives would be to come in from the Waikato side of Thompson's Track or come in from Puketutu Hut but I gather that is very overgrown.

• Roadrunner79 I'm keen to do a two day walk in and out to this hut, can anyone suggest the best route? Thompson's track from the Bay of Plenty seems like the easiest but not very inspiring. Could go from either side of the Kaimais

• madpom ... which is sorta worrying when you've an orange emergency blanket stretched out to attract rescue - there's a significant chance you'll be mistaken for a hut and ignored.

• pmcke Quite some years ago DOC put out a recreational plan for this area. It advocated the removal of a number of huts, probably this one too. There were howls of rage from regular users so, apart from one hut near Mt Te Aroha, I don't think any of them got removed. This seems to be a new phase where they are actually maintaining the huts. Personally I don't get too upset when huts get removed. Usually it is because they are poorly sited or have passed their use by date. Then when the hut is removed it usually reveals a great camping site.

• bigpaul The power of sites like these i suspect. Doc would be wise to peruse it from time to time this public opinion is more accurate than their log books.

• pmcke Holy Cow! I don't believe it!. One minute this hut didn't even seem to exist and now it is starting to look flash. I wonder when it will get the DOC green paint job.
