This photo was taken in Feb 03. The lake was drained in sept 2007 after a breach in the tephra wall on the lower right (out of sight).The path of the subsequent lahar followed the obvious channel at the back known as the Whangaehu river. It's not the first time the lake has drained. In 1953 it caused a train disaster which killed dozens.
