It is possible to do the return trip in one day, stopping for lunch at the cafe by Ballance Bridge. Walking fast, times can easily be halved. Gets quite cold, as the track is in the bush. Also, gets dark quickly due to surrounding hills etc.
If you want to walk the whole thing, but can't manage it in a day: walk from Ashurst end to Windy Lookout and back, then another time from the Woodville end to Windy Lookout and back
