One river crossing, but you can step on boulders and not get your feet wet in low flow! Upper part of the track is exposed, so be careful in winter. Lower part of the track is in bush. Whakapapaiti Hut is a superb hut if you care to stay a night but you will need a hut pass or one hut tickets. Hut warden resident in summer.
Nice family trip with young kids if you stay the night in the hut (around 3 hours walk each day).
If you enter via the top end of the track then you can avoid the river crossing. Can also add the Silica Falls loop into the walk as well, cuts the road walking distance in half.
