Sick of that stodge in a billy? Sick of one-pot dehi stews? Looking for somewhere to go on your next tramp? Then John Sawyer and Liz Baker’s “Gourmet Tramping in New Zealand” is for you.

Definitely aimed at the “Backcountry Comfort Seeker” this 120 page guide book is a must on every tramper’s bookshelf.

This book features 14 New Zealand tramps from Great Barrier Island in the north to Stewart Island in the South. Each tramp is in the easy category, about 3 hours tramping per day, and provides full information where to go, how to get there, where to shop in the area and what to see. Full colour photographs are on every page.

But the difference with this book is that each tramp is matched with an easy to cook gourmet meal that can be prepared within half an hour on a gas cooker. Full preparation instructions are giving along with an optional matching wine for each meal.

The meals range from “Spicy lamb meatballs with bulgar wheat, hummus and stir-fried zucchini and capsicum” to “Moroccan beef with olive couscous and yoghurt mint sauce”. There will be a meal there to tempt the appetite of any tired tramper, making one more thing to look forward to on the arrival at the hut at the end of the day.

To complete this book there are general chapters on safety, equipment with hints on how to make your trip more pleasant.

Even the more ambitious tramper, heading into the wilderness will be able to find ideas in this book to supplement his normal tramping diet.

I certainly recommend it. Bon Appetite!
