These are ice needles that form under little stones and pieces of dirt and lift them up perpendicular to the ground. Thus on a downward slope the dirt and stones are transported downhill a little bit when the ice melts. It fascinating to listen to the strange sounds when the sun warms the ground and all the meedles melt and break. I don't know the exact english term for it, german geomorphologists call it Kammeis. I found these near Lake Grassmere
