Green Hut April 2019

This photo shows the semi derelict Green Hut at Slab Hut Creek just downstream from Commissioners Flat in the Reefton area of the West Coast. The hut is not particularly old having been built by modern era alluvial gold miners in the early to mid 1980's.
An interesting aspect to this area is the extensive historic gold workings and remnant pieces of historic pack tracks.
Easy access to the hut is off the Big River Road via old logging roads and a bull dozer track. You do need to know which tracks to take as there is a maze of old tracks. This access can be ridden by skilled moto cross riders though has got too rough for most 4x4 vehicles. More interesting access only suitable for walking is from SH7, either from near Reefton Saddle or the Slab Hut Creek recreational area.
