Ladder almost 150 years old!

Ladder almost 150 years old!

In 1868,John Acland,Mt Peel Station, made several explorations of the Frances Glacier area & left a 4m totara ladder under an overhanging rock to aid crevasse travel. It was sighted by hunters in the 50s & in 1975 by Peter Bain & Colin Burrowes. In March, members of the Dogtuckers(a loose group of aging outdoorsmen who imbibe Scotlands` finest while reminiscing past exploits),including John Acland(great Grandson),Peter Bain,Norm Hardie,Geoff Spearpoint,Brian Stickle,Bill Hood & a dozen others, walked or flew into the ladder site to lay a commemoration plaque. The ladder was removed in 1992 by the Acland family & now resides in the Canterbury Museum.John Acland & Peter Bain (r) in photo.
