The track is about 1 hr 15 min from end to end, or you can walk a loop of 1 hr 45 min starting from (and returning to) the Information Centre on the Foreshore.

Access

On London Quay head east toward the marina and turn right onto Wellington Street. Take the next left onto Waikawa Road and the third right onto Newgate Street. The track starts on the right. The Esson's Valley end of the track is harder to find. From London Quay take Auckland Street south, and turn right onto Wairau Road then left onto Devon Street. This street bends under a railway viaduct and becomes Garden Terrace. Where signs mark the route up Garden Terrace to Barnes and Humphries Dams, turn off and cross a private bridge to the track start.

Tirohanga Walkway: 1 hr 15 min, easy

From Newgate Street, the track zigzags through regenerating bush, gaining height quickly. On a sunny day, skinks bask in the light at the trackside. After half an hour the track flattens off, sidling past a few big trees to the summit view point. From here, there are almost 360 degrees of view.

From here, the track drops quickly into the green Esson's Valley.
