Whitikau Campsite

A basic DOC campground 12km west of the Motu Road, and the junctions of the 4WD Otipi Road and Takaputahi Road, on the banks of the Takaputahi River. The campsite has a toilet, and water from the river. Good swimming holes exist below.

This is about as far as you can go in a 2WD - beyond 4WD can continue to the Motu along Otipi Rd. From here you can reach Mangakirikiri hut downriver with numerous deep crossings of this deep river.

Alternatively you can walk to Mangakirikiri via the 4wd Takaputahi Road, dropping to Mangamate stream, and then down the Mangakirikiri to Mangakirikiri Hut. This is a 1-2 day walk. Be warned - there are deep pools in the Mangamate which require swimming.
