Day Hikes near Queenstown and Fox Glacier
Hi there,
We are coming to NZ from OZ in late November - Early December.
We have most of our trip planned but still have a day or two free in both Queenstown and near Fox Glacier.
My brother and I are very competent, experienced and fit hikers (i.e. willing to do up to 30km a day or more if necessary to see the as much as possible in the limited time we will have - competent with any scrambling or climbing which doesn't require ropes)
Does anyone have any recommendations of some good Day Hikes / Climbs in the Queenstown or Fox Glacier areas?
One suggestion has been a grand traverse of the Remarkables (not sure of snow condition that time of year though??)
On this trip we are also planning to do a hike along Roteburn, Greenstone and Caples Tracks in around 2.5 days.
We are mainly after some very challenging and rewarding hiking (or climbing to the tops of any peaks in these areas)
Any help in our planning would be greatly appreciated!

A trip up Mt Fox at Fox Glacier offers wonderful views of the Southern Alps and doesn't need a rope. But it can be noisy with the helicopters / scenic planes. Also a more sedate but beautiful walk there goes along the coast from Gillespies Beach.
Not sure what you mean about a grand traverse of the Remarkables, but climbing Double and Single Cone in the Remarkables will probably need a rope, ice axe and crampons at that time of year.
In Queenstown the walk up Wye Creek is good and so is Ben Lomond.
Around Queenstown - well you should probably head over to Wanaka and Mt Aspiring National Park. Good day trips in this area are Rob Roy Glacier track (you only see the glacier, not walk on it); and a day walk to Mt Brewster Hut (although it would be nice if you had a couple of days there).
You should know that because of the terrain in New Zealand we measure trips in time not distance - a 5km walk can sometimes take 4 hours.
