Whangaehu Hut

Built on the eastern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the 1960's, with spectacular views across the Rangipo Desert and down the Whangaehu River. While Dome Shelter is located at 2670m, overnighting is prohibited except in emergencies making Whangaehu Hut the highest accommodation in the North Island. A tiny get away in the middle of nowhere.

Access The most accessible route to this hut is via a sparsely poled/cairned route starting from Tukino Village.
Bookings Required

Managed and maintained by the New Zealand Alpine Club. Bookings are no longer required or accepted: beds are 1st come, 1st served. $10 / $20 per-night (members / non-members - 2013 prices). Keys to gate on 4wd track available through NZAC.
