Waikare Junction Hut
Te Urewera
Waikare Junction Hut is another Whakatane River hut situated on grass/scrub terraces, though this one lies some distance above the river. It's a pleasent, sunny spot after the damp Hanamahihi upstream and has not been abused in the same way as the downriver Ohora Hut.
Most visitors to the hut are on the Whakatane River Track. However, 2km downriver a track leads up the Ohane River to Ohane Hut with a track branching off to cross to the Waikare River. Note that the nearest hut in the Waikare catchment is Takarua: Waikarewhenua has been removed.
Note that Waikare Junction Hut is not named on some maps. It is the 'Hut' point 1km north of the footbridge over the Waikare River.
