A popular stopping off point on walks to Mount Holdsworth, Powell Hut in the Tararua Ranges is 4 hours from the car park and 1 hour from the summit. The hut offers great views across the Wairarapa Plains.

The previous hut burned down 17 May 1999, and was replaced January 2000.

All parties will be expected to book from November through to February. Booking are made for individual bunks. Fees will remain the same: $15 for adults (18+) and $5 for youth (11-17). An additional $5 to $10 management fee will apply depending on party size. Transfers and cancellations are subject to conditions. There will be a warden on-site for the duration of the booking period to manage the booking system. Unallocated bunks will still be available to trampers.
