This is quite a long stroll - not taxing but definitely a full day at this time of year. To get better views and stretch ourselves a bit we attempted Rat Hill on the return, but with no markers and short time we made a hash of it and hand to abandon the ascent. We should have done it on the way to Tribulation Hut as there is a fence line of follow at least. Hut was in nice condition. One word of warning is that we found orange markers few and far between and with a lot of stock tracks and over grown brush in the gullies, you have to be alert to follow the correct path. We also made the mistake of not turning at the Hakatere sign and rejoining the track at the right spot - but this may have just been our complacency. It is easy-ish to re-find the track as the 4WD track we mistakenly followed runs parrallel but at a higher altitude.

This hut has no fireplace, wood box or any form of heating. Thanks, DoC! It does have a concrete floor though which is a big improvement on the original dirt floor by accounts.
