Lyell Saddle hut Sept 2011
This recently built hut was started in April 2011. It was initially lived in by track builders but is now open to the public. Bookings are required and a fee of $15 per person per night is payable to the Old Ghost Road Trust. Book via this website http://www.oldghostroad.org.nz/experience-the-ogr/book-huts
This hut has been built as part of one of the NZ Cycle Trail Projects. It is the first of four new huts on what will be the Lyell-Mokihinui section of a 160km cycleway/tramping route.
The Lyell Saddle hut sits on the dividing ridge between Lyell Creek and the South Branch of the Mokihinui River. It is a two roomed hut with a big porch. It sleeps twelve. There are good views from the hut into the Mokihinui. It is so popular two sleepouts have been added at Lyell Saddle to boost accomodation capacity.

glennj To those that have trouble recognising Lyell Saddle Hut in this photo it is because it was taken before the deck was added. The angle is quite unusual in that it is from an aspect that few visitors go to now because the deck is in the way and the bank has regrowth on it.
