Nice 4 hour stroll in. Dog loved it too. Ice on tent next morning.

A great walk from the car park by the Potts River. Camped by the lake with my son and his friend. Lake was frozen in the middle, but clear at the edges. A very cold night.

Unlike the last comment from 2 years ago, it is now quite easy to find the track in most places. There are a few patches of heavy tussock but it's so well signposted you really can't get lost at least during daytime. Gorgeous views from the ridge once you achieve it, and I started my tramp from the carpark by the Rangitata River and walked up the plain towards the Dogs Range, then hooked to the right to get to the lake itself. I turned and tramped back from Mystery Lake back to the carpark, all told 6.5 hours with several breaks for photographs and water and rest.

Magical spot. The text refers to a track running to the lake from the Potts River. it's newly formed since the last time I was there a couple of years ago and also marked on the Te Araroa map number 106. Can't see any reference to a track on the DoC website FWIW. Mind you, there are new DoC tracks that exist that aren't marked on the map e.g. around the Dogs Range as part of Te Araroa and other developments. Someone who has a bach at Lake Clearwater told me that fishing in the lake is prohibited so the trout there eat all the other fish and grow very big. He called them Jack trout.
