A group of us young 'uns did this in reverse, coming up from Boom Flat. Fairly straightforward track up with the occasional view through the trees. Took us 3.5 hours to reach the hut, including half an hour for lunch. The route down via the Wainora track was much more interesting (read: muddy and rooty)! A neat rock outcrop to scramble over along the top before dropping down past the Wainora & Cookson Kauri trees. The track is completely gravelled (lots of steps!) from the Cookson Kauri to the carpark. Took us 4 hours from the hut down Wainora and back to Boom Flat (again with 1/2 an hour for lunch). | |
