Check-ins

Rocky Creek / Griffin Creek

People have been going astray at the final junction upstream of Rocky Hut so Frank and I went in and recut that junction and put up permolats, cruise tape and replaced the cairn that had been washed away. The track is now marked from upstream of the slip to the saddle. DoC have removed the hutbook that had the cool route guide in the front and replaced it. We noticed Eigill's work with the white tin lids and other track clearing he'd done. A bit naughty to create a new track bypassing the open slumped area we'd previously cut so we cleared this again and removed his track markers. However his reinstatements of the original NZFS bypass tracks are an improvement on the river bed. We had been all set to do this ourselves when we had to leave off to rescue Ranger Biv from DoC's and Poma Palmer in particular's plan to remove it a few years ago. Saw heaps of goats way up Rocky Creek. They're doing their little bit to keep things trimmed. Very tame - they settled down again after they saw us. Could have had rogan josh for dinner several times over. We saw blue ducks twice, the second time 2 nearly fledged ducklings with mum and dad. One time we saw a blue duck 10 minutes upriver from the Taipo bridge.

I did this loop again this week. The saddle section is badly overgrown now but well marked with tape. Back in 75 the saddle section was cut wide & quite open. Even in the last few years it is noticeable how much more the vegetation has closed in over the water courses. I did a tiny bit of silky work & taping to help keep it followable. The good news is that Eigill W says in the Rocky biv hut book that he is going to cut it. Eigill has already recut the bypasses from the end of the terrace up to Rocky biv. Honora from the roadend across the terrace to Rocky Ck the section that Frank & yourself tidied is still swish & a pleasure to walk on. Someone has recently cleared windfalls on it; Eigill or yourselves? Goats are doing a good job of keeping the woody regrowth on this section mowed down.
