This is by far our favourite overnight trip in the Kaimai. Doing the loop clockwise is definitely the easier and better option and the views on the way up the Tuahu track are awesome. We took just over 3 hours to stroll in on the Tuahu track and just over two out on the Te Rere track. The possums love to keep you up at night running around on the deck and climbing the water tank but they are fairly docile - a few recieved good whacks with a walking pole last night and one met it's end with a slingshot pellet. When you get to the hut leave your gear and head back up the old North South track to the big rock, about 5 minutes up - fantastic views of the whole Bay of Plenty, all the way down to Ruapehu.

Great walk, took about 7 hours. As always in the Kaimais, some sections are muddy and not well kept, but this adds to the adventure providing you are not injured etc.

Good track with beautiful views of the Waikato. Stayed at the hut and with no issues.
