We were misled by the weather forecast. The forecast said winds would rise in the evening, but by 11am along the ridgeline myself (6'2" 90kg) and my 6'4" 100kg partner were getting shunted back and forth by the wind and sleet, with snow forecast the next day. Still an amazing accomplishment as this was my second time doing it, did it once before in 2014 in stunning weather in late Feb, and repeated it in March 2016 with good weather. Don't underestimate how quickly conditions change up there, it is alpine, and when it's sunny in summer there is no shelter from the sun or heat. Take plenty of water and food. | |

Went in more prepared that the rest of my party but still wasn't prepared for the top of Ngaruehoe. Closed in and was proper cold. Still a great day and would like to do again. | |

Best walked in Winter, track is massively overcrowded in Summer. The Tongariro summit climb is a worthy addition, if only to enjoy a little (relative) solitude. Rope and chain now added to ridge climb out of Red Crater, much safer in slippery conditions. | |
