28 Nov 2018 | Arrived here along the Mangakino Pack Track. This track is officially closed but you won't find that out till you get to all the Heli bags and half finished boardwalks about an hour out. Friendly DOC contractors told us there is supposed to be a closed sign at the Te Aroha end of the track, we didn't come that way so were surprised. DOC contractors told us the track is closed for a few months, check with DOC before coming that way. | |

21 Apr 2018 | First trip here to introduce a friend to an easy overnight tramp. Arrived at 3pm on Saturday afternoon to find 22 people in the 16 bunk hut with a handful of tents outside too. Gotta get there early if you want a bunk. I'm wondering if it's always been this busy, or closure of the Waitaks has increased pressure on these huts? | |

19 Nov 2016 | Nice hut, warm even without a stove. Shared it with a noisy but friendly school group. Walked from Wairongomai taking Butlers Incline, Wairongomai Saddle, Mangakino Pack Track and left the next day for Karangahake Gorge via Waitawheta Pipeline track. Nice 2 days trip. Mangakino Pack track is rough and slow going, slippery, and narrow, with a few fallen trees that require going down and up gullies to avoid the mess, would not recommend it to a beginner. Apart from that it's a nice part of the Kaimais and a good weekend tramp. | |

23 Apr 2015 | Hut in good condition at the moment (apart from rubbish). Be aware that this hut is often used by school groups or Duke of Edinburgh expeditions so don't be surprised to be sharing with a lot of teenagers. We were lucky and had the hut to ourselves. Took 10 hours from Te Aroha with a very unfit party member. | |
