Alert Catchpool Valley Road damage

A section of the Catchpool Valley Road is down to one lane due to storm damage. The road is open but observe all signs.

Alert Predator control - Southern Remutaka

A predator control operation using toxic bait containing 1080 was completed on Tuesday 15 November 2022. The Southern Remutaka area is open with warning signs at key entrances. 

There may be toxic carcasses and bait (green coloured pellets) in the area. It's not safe to hunt for food. Warning signs and this web alert will be removed when the area is safe again. 

Dog access rules vary within the operation area. 1080 is deadly to dogs.

This operation is part DOC's National Predator Control Programme to protect native species.

Alert Low firewood at Turere Lodge and Haurangi Hut

There is low firewood at Turere Lodge and Haurangi Hut. Plan accordingly and except supplies to run out. Firewood should be replenished in late April 2023.

There is a slip on Big Bend Track between the Turere Curved Bridge and Turere Lodge. Take extra care when walking this section of the track.

Alert Orongaorongo Track reroute

A section of the Orongorongo Track at Jacob’s Ladder has been rerouted due to the risk of an imminent collapse. The slip cannot be seen from the track.

The reroute is well signposted. Due to repeated sign vandalism, please turn back if you find yourself on a section of rough, uneven track with deep cracks. The rerouted track is a temporary tramping track with some large, unformed steps. It will be upgraded soon.

Jacob’s Ladder is the area where the track descends steeply down to the Orongorongo River Valley. This is about five minutes before the curved bridge when travelling from the Catchpool carpark end.
