42 Traverse Track reopen with reroute for walkers and cyclists
The 42 Traverse has been reopened with a bypass track in place for walkers and cyclists. The end to end experience is still closed to 4WD and quad bikes users. Signs have been installed at all major intersections. The bypass (shown in orange on the track map) follows an old bush track and connects with Top Track. 42 Traverse bypass track map (JPG, 1,200K) Cyclists should dismount their bikes for the bypass section as it is steep and slippery. Predator control for Southern Ruapehu
A predator control operation using toxic bait containing 1080 was completed on 28 October 2023. Southern Ruapehu is open to the public with warning signs in place at key entrances. There may be toxic carcasses and bait (green coloured pellets) in the area. It’s not safe to hunt for food in this area for up to eight months. Warning signs and this web alert will be removed when the area is safe again. You are not allowed to bring your dog to this area at any time.
