Heaphy Track partially closed – through trips not possible except by pre-arranged helicopter transfe
The Heaphy Track is closed at the Heaphy River because of severe damage caused to the bridge by storms in February 2022. Visitors can walk from Brown Hut as far as Lewis Shelter on the eastern side of the track, and from Kohaihai up the Heaphy River valley to the site of the old Heaphy River bridge on the western side. There is currently no bridge over the Heaphy River. This section of the track will remain closed until the bridge can be replaced.
Until repairs are completed helicopter transfers are available over the closed section by booking through Golden Bay Air or Heli Charter Karamea. This enables walkers to complete the entire track from end-to-end.
The Heaphy Track is still open at either end and all huts are open and bookable.

The track between Brown Hut and Lewis Shelter is open and in good condition. Visitors can book Aorere Shelter Campsite, Brown, Perry Saddle, Gouland Downs, Saxon and James Mackay huts and campsites.

The track between Kohaihai and Heaphy Hut is open. Track repairs are underway between Scott’s Beach and Heaphy Hut. Beware of machinery operating and follow instructions.
