Expect changed conditions and damage
This site is open but tracks and huts in the Ruahine Forest Park may be damaged with slips, flooding or fallen trees from recent severe weather. Be prepared to turn back if needed. Roads in the area have also been damaged by the severe weather and may be closed. Check with your local council or Waka Kotahi for the latest road closure information. No access to Sunrise and Triplex huts from North Block Road
There is no access to Sunrise and Triplex huts from the North Block Road end due to road closures. Wakarara Road is open to residents only (via Makaroro Road). You can acces the huts from the western side of the Ruahine Range. This route is suitable only for experienced trampers. This includes the Mangakukeke Road and Purity Hut access, and Rangitane Road which requires walking in to Kawhatau Base, then accessing the Hikurangi range. This will involved multi-day tramping. Until Wakarara Road is fully open the huts will not be bookable, and will operate the same as non-bookable huts. First published on 8 March 2023. |
