Mount Tongariro
1 February 20151 February 2015
A welcome respite from the tourist horde on the crossing itself. Takes an hour there and back at a decent pace.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
1 February 20151 February 2015
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Best walked in Winter, track is massively overcrowded in Summer. The Tongariro summit climb is a worthy addition, if only to enjoy a little (relative) solitude. Rope and chain now added to ridge climb out of Red Crater, much safer in slippery conditions.

Studholme Saddle Hut

Studholme Saddle Hut
The biv downstream is alive and kicking and looking great - a nicer spot than the hut in my opinion.
Studholme Saddle Biv

Studholme Saddle Biv
Far from being removed, she's had a repaint inside and out (and a new long drop installed) and looks good for another 40 years.
Circumnavigating the Kiwi

Circumnavigating the Kiwi
A Kaweka classic - gut busting climbs, stunning views over the central plateau, rugged alpine tops. Starting and finishing at the Lakes carpark removes the long, slow climb from Cameron and replaces it with a more abrupt ascent up Kuripapango that takes only an hour. Wilding pines get worse every time I'm up there...
Cameron Hut (Kaweka)
1 November 20141 November 2014
Cameron Hut (Kaweka)
Beautiful spot, best to take the river route unless you're a mountain goat.
Back Ridge Hut
1 May 20141 May 2014
Back Ridge Hut
Great alternate route in from Makahu Saddle up Makahu Spur, along the tops, then down via North Ridge (takes about 3 1/2 hrs). Hut given some love by DOC early May 2014 and now in great condition. Nice camping spot down by the chopper pad.
Queen Charlotte Track

An underrated three day walk through stunning Sounds scenery visiting several historic sites along the way. Treat yourself for once and let the shuttle deliver all of your heavy stuff to the campsite each night.
Comet Hut
1 March 20141 March 2014
Comet Hut
Basic hut, right on the access road. Amazingly good condition seeing how easy it is to get to. I'm sure the munters will find it eventually.
Shutes Hut
1 March 20141 March 2014
Shutes Hut
Lovely bit of history in a very sunny sheltered clearing. No camping around hut, but there's a nice spot down by the Taruarau River (25 minutes away).
Kiwi Mouth Hut
1 March 20141 March 2014
Kiwi Mouth Hut
Cosy (and smoky) wee hut in a sheltered spot with plenty of space for camping alongside. Bit of a bugger to get to from Kiwi Saddle - both available routes have their challenges...
Top Maropea Hut
1 February 20141 February 2014
Top Maropea Hut
Idyllic spot, doesn't get a lot of use, only 3 hours from road end. Great camping spot adjacent to hut.

4 out of 4 for camping - plenty of nice level sites scattered through adjacent bush. Now has two water tanks and the 'rustic' open shelter is no more (see pic)
Lake Waikaremoana Track
1 November 20131 November 2013
Lake Waikaremoana Track
Absolutely stunning. Varied topography and wildlife make for an interesting tramp. Walked it off season and had campgrounds to ourselves - not too chilly at night, and nice and cool during the day. A (short) dip in the lake is a must do - cold but invigorating.
