Kepler Track
Oct 2017. Lot of people coming in from Rainbow car park, skipping Moturau Hut & overnighting Iris Burn. Majority return out the same way next day. A lot of occupancy on this one hut, more than the others. Was not like this 2016.

Heaphy Track
The beachfront track is well clear of the high tide mark and can be walked regardless of the tide timetable (unless you choose to go down onto the beach). Wear your comfortable boots or cushy socks. Stoney track can be hard on feet.

Wangapeka Track
Easy peasy. Don't know why more tourists aren't doing this ?.

Acland Shelter
Very comfortable for a boil-up & food break.
Mt Somers Track (South Face)

Mt Somers Track (South Face)
A long traverse, with ups & downs thru gullies. Most have streams. Many streams South of Acland Shelter. Only 1 North of it.

Casey Saddle - Poulter River - Binser Saddle
Got to Casey Hut Site late. Still good light 8.40pm. Day-trip to Lake Minchin & back. Leave your pack @ Poulter Hut. Good tenting sites by permanent water flows on Aeroplane Flat. Sandflies didn't find me on mass until 6pm :) Saw the grassy site on Binser Saddle. Water WAS trickling a few minutes away, but how desperate would you need to be ?.
Pudding Hill Stream Route

Pudding Hill Stream Route
Some sandflies here and there. Still thigh-deep in places in mid-Summer. Cross over, cross back, sometimes down the middle, dozens of times. Rocks slippery. Turbulence can make seeing foot placement tricky. Can be like crossing on roller-skates without looking down. Exit is in a large gully, in sight of farmland. Large cairn. Have added photos :)
Ryde Falls from Coopers Creek

Ryde Falls from Coopers Creek
The track's unmistakably sign-posted now. The 'campsite' is 2 levels of compacted gravel. Patches are okay for 1- or 2-person tents. Water is good & handy, but sandflies are many. Very few wasps on the track this Summer. Some, but nothing worrisome. Still a few muddy bits despite a drought Summer.
Boyle Village - Mt Faust - Boyle Hut

Boyle Village - Mt Faust - Boyle Hut
The track sign halfway uphill from the Adventure playground has now been rotated so that it correctly points up- & down-hill. Otherwise, take the RHS track. Circle ridge clockwise & left of the features. rough track is apparent. Correct spur down to BF Hut isn't apparent until you start to descend Faust and get behind pt1661. Only found 3 markers, then nothing until within shouting distance of Hut. Stay left of centre down the spur, without going into the big valley, and you come out at the Hut woodshed. Soft ground and fairly open. Hardly 'bush bashing'

Travers-Sabine
Hail turned to snow as we arrived Upper Traverse Hut. Continued for 24hr, but attempted the Saddle next morning, ready to turn back. If we stopped, we shivered. Nobody game to remove gloves for photos. Low visibility anyway. Relatively fine on the West Sabine side. One solo tramper wisely turned back, as his wet weather gear wasn't even that.

Cave Stream
Comfortable in synthetic T-shirt, light merino jersey & nylon parka or 2nd T. Shorts over Long Johns. Light tramping boots or runners. Sometimes need to have 2 hands free. Deepest part is entry pool at first bend. Only squeeze is the final ledge at the exit, which is in daylight, & has chain to hang on to.
