Missing Mongrel Mob now a real hagiography
Wow, look how Kirsty Lawrence has produced the finest hagiography or our missing Mongrel Mob members: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/96634457/search-continues-for-missing-pair-in-tongariro-national-park
All their supposed last words have been reported in the media (they fill a book by now).
They "allegedly fled from a police chase." Allegedly, wow wow wow. Well, at least it's slightly better than the Mongrel Mob description: "the police chased them into the bush."
And stealing a car? No way! He was on "a road trip. ... travelling to try and keep himself busy"
My tears start flowing now.
And what a wonderful kid: "How blessed am I as a mum to have a kid like that."
His Dad was a bit more upfront about his son some weeks ago, but that has now transformed into: 'Hakopa Ngaronoa was an adored member of the family, known for being "mischievous and loveable".'
You don't say.
It seems our Mongrel Mob members have an additional human right: the right to be whitewashed.

You can't help wonder what they reflected on as death was approaching.
How senseless their life course had been?
What they would've done differently?
What they would change if they were rescued at the last minute?
Quite sobering really.
We've probably all been in situations where we have bitten off more than we could chew or been caught out by circumstance, but having the skillset, equipment and experience to make the right decisions makes ALL the difference.
Without those, being stuck in the bush would be a lonely frightening death
@stride your comments made me think Hypothermia is a strange beast, and as it advances the thought processes become confused. Logical thinking goes out the window. Actions are irrational. In the advanced stages thinking in any shape or form is non existent.
So initially they were lost, possibly frightened that they might not be found and confused because they knew they were lost. It seems evident that they divested their clothes, that is possibly the point at which hypothermia got to them and thinking went awol. It is sad to think that at that stage they may have given no thought to anything or anyone. A very disturbing and cold comfort to those left behind.
I have often wondered what went through my younger brothers mind as he succumbed far too early in life almost 30 years ago. I have found no comfort in those thoughts.
Yeah I have to agree with @TararuaHunter and @Matthew here.
One of them sounded like a nice kid, his sister met us & thanked us all for helping search. Regardless of what the other had been up too in his life they didn't deserve that end.
I spent 3 miserable days in that horrible bush looking for them & don't regret any of it.
Lucky we're just search & rescue because if we were search, judge & rescue I'd be leaving a lot of people out there.
@FrankB, sorry I missed your comment.
You're probably quite right, hypothermia would have messed with their heads in the end.
My comment wasn't meant to sound pious or judgemental but I can't help but feel that at some point well before delirium took over they would've done a lot of soul searching. Maybe not!
Maybe they were staunch to the end.
We'll never know.
Whatever their life path or choices it is always a sad tragedy when someone dies in a tragic situation far before their time has come.
I choose to live in society and to me all life is precious. Because some have their vision clouded and don't cherish life, doesn't make me want them to suffer in any way. Then I would be no different to them.
Compassion is the higher ground. We must all look the other side in the face one day. I hope all are at peace when they do so.
Staunch to me means stubbornly denying reflection on the demons that trouble us inside. It's nothing to admire.
@ Gaiters
Well expressed. Judging their lives is what we have laws, courts and police for; the rest of us are better served by compassion.
They failed to stop in a stolen car. The last time I checked, dying frozen and alone in the NZ bush does not appear in the Crimes or Sentencing Acts for stealing a car. Even if it did, it would no be right and those in society with compassion for others would have campaigned for it to be removed in short shrift.
There is no suggestion of other wrongdoing in any media reports and it seems like people have speculated purely on some emotional family member’s statements previously as well as their affiliation. Even if they had done something, I don’t it was is particularly relevant to the situation at the time.
Regardless of what they may have done previously, no one deserves to end that way.
Mosley, they were Mongrel Mob members. Their gang family was claiming they saw their dog signs in the bush.
What did they do to get entry into the Mongrel Mob? Rape someone? Participate in a gang rape? Stab or kill somebody?
@ berend
this forum isnt here to speculate about gangs or cast unfounded accusations, two people are dead and you have no respect for the dead. they werent convicted of a crime, thers no proof they have done anything wrong other than steal a car, this is not a court of law, innocent until proven guilty. let the dead rest in peace
