Calls to close access to the Waitakere Range
From a joint press release, probably of most interest to people in the north:
"The Tree Council, Waitakere Ranges Protection Society and Forest & Bird stand with Te Kawerau a Maki in calling for a rāhui and closure of the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park in response to the monitoring figures from Auckland Council’s latest survey of kauri dieback infection.
"The results from the Waitakere Ranges have confirmed their worst fears about the spread of kauri dieback. While the average number of trees infected across the entire Waitakere Ranges may be 19% (more than doubled from 8% 5 years ago) the infection in areas where kauri dominates is actually affecting between 33% and 58% of trees.
"The Council report states that local extinction of kauri in areas like Piha, where the infection is worst, is highly likely within 5 years unless urgent and drastic action is taken now. Extinction of kauri across the entire Waitakere Ranges is possible within a generation."
[...and so on...]

you're reliant on everyone cleaning properly...not going to happen, waitakeres get massive no's of people and the most popular walks go through...... the mature kauri trees that everyone wants to see.... i wondered what the logic was of partial closure of the park was going to do... it was just playing russian roulette . but theres too many people in that area wanting access who have easy access to the park and you will never enforce a total ban of people to the park.., theres dozens of track entrances to the park, you cant police them.... its too late anyway, you're closing the barn door after the horse has bolted....
even if you want to get rid of the pigs, you need to get a budget approved and it will take so long to get rid of them all. the trees will continue to get infected during that time. its naive to think closing the park now will do anymore than slow the spread of the disease
Too many people on a day drive through stopping to take a walk with no thought bout what they may be taking in with them. I don't believe enough are taking the cleaning stations seriously enough.
Closure? Too many access points. Too may picnic areas. Too easy access. Short of Trumps wall around Mexico, can't see much else in the way of a solution.
There's an MPI response from today's show at http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/201855235/mpi-responds-to-criticism-over-biosecurity-and-border-control
