problems when not taking enough gear

Wayno's probably talking about walkingwithwired.com.
I don't overpack, but don't leave things out when I don't think they'll be needed - bit of paranoia about getting caught out. I do have some issues with gear being a bit bulky - I had to pick between price and size when buying and went with price. For example my cooker is bigger than others as are other bits and bobs like my tent, sleeping bag, and jacket. I also take water as I sweat a lot and like to keep topped up. My average pack is probably around 18kg but it is the volume rather than weight which frustrates me usually, particularly as I don't like putting stuff on the outside of my pack.
My next buy is a smaller tent - my current Mannagum Howqua was cheap but doesn't have vestibules, weighs 2.3kg, and packs to 40ish by 16ish so takes up a fair whack of space - looking for a tunnel-style tent next. A smaller lightweight sleeping bag for summer is also on the list. Not getting a smaller jacket though, I love my one!
friend of mine has done the pacific crest trail, and the TA
she says people who've done the PCT are queing up to do the TA , she tells them its a lot harder than the PCT and they need to take more clothes and better gear, but they dont believe her and assume she's not a good tramper, or its just the talk of someone who's not as tough as them....
I'm always loath to talk about things I haven't done in a matter of fact way.
Ian H, which route did those trampers take, from West Arm to Milford Track??
They'd have to get through the Kepler, Murchison, Stuart and Franklin Mountains. Epic!!!
@Kreig:
Yes, possibly the biggest epic possible in NZ. Only rivaled by walking to West Cape and back I would think.

Damn, Mike Abbotts full article seems to have disappeared from the link in the previous thread, anyone have another link or archived copy?
Here is an article on Mike Abbott's trip, I thought the one I had linked to previously had more detail, but the following works:

Tristan Riley's article is still there:

He is the one I referenced who seems to have gone quite lightweight - homemade packs and bivibags / light nylon fly and got through in 19 days, most have allowed / needed closer to 30 days.
Link to his take on lightweight gear for NZ conditions:

A very good reference point as he has obviously tested his lightweight approach on the hardest NZ conditions possible.
Just spent the last couple of hours reading all of the links (and links within the links).... Oh, the possibilities......!
Sandfly suit ?. $9.09 from NZ Safety. Breathable fabric, elasticised cuffs & stops radioactive/nuclear particles (dust). Might be enough to stop sandflies ?.

Think I'll stick to LS Merino & chemicals. Might add a Buff, ninja-style, to protect the head.

Oh! To be that young and fit again.
