hydrostatic head ratings
I am in the market for a new camping tent and am racking my brain over the right Hydrostatic Head rating that will be suitable for the tent floor.
I like to camp in places like the Great Barrier Island and it is a pretty rugged place. Sometimes you have to camp on gritty and very wet ground. I have been flooded out in crappy older tents in the past.
Is a 5,000mm HH good enough or should i be looking at 10,000mm? Also, what about 5,000mm if I use a groundsheet underneath it?
Thank you for any advice you can offer.
10,000mm is regarded as waterproof in storm conditions wher water is being blown at the fabric at a decent speed.
given how wet NZ is I'd go with 10,000
the floor is more important because putting weight on the fabric increases the pressure of the water against the fabric, you can get away with much lower HH on the tent fly and the water is less likely to work its way through
I think using a groundsheet underneath is a good idea to help keep your tent floor in good order. We use a cut open big orange MSC pack liner. It is a perfect fit for our tent and makes it easy to decide where to pitch the tent by marking the boundaries so to speak.
If you use a groundsheet, make sure none of it extends beyond the fly or it will allow water to track in under your tent floor and possibly pool.
