Pack wanted to buy
I am wanting a buy a reliable waterproof pack of a reasonable size. Would like a reputable brand, old is okay as long as everything works fine. My 2 sons and I are just beginning to get into overnighters, having done many day tramps were ready for the next step. We did one overnighter the boys used their school bags which was not really ideal, but we are keen to start gathering some gear. We are in South Waikato prepared to travel a couple of hours for the right pack.

Was the Torlesse made in a gold colour? Have seen a 2nd hand one for sale but so wary of fake cheapies.
Older models, other countries -

Torlesse is about $100 off at Macpac until Jan 16th.
Probably a Waitangi Day sale coming too ?.
If you just want some packs to get some more overnighters in, just get second hand whatevers, so long as they fit (or can adjust to fit) your frame.
If you get into longer trips and have some budget to spend, you want to look at lightweight packs. Osprey Exos are awesome, not terribly expensive and well featured given that they weigh less than half of what an average pack of the same volume would weigh. Most hiking packs weigh 3 kgs plus before you even put anything into them.
Waterproofing: forget "waterproof packs" or pack liners, just dry bag all of your water-vulnerable kit (the kinds of bags kayakers and such use). That way you're so waterproof you could pack-swim across a lake if you had to.
Faded orange or brown might be described as gold. Macpac like so many other fashion retailers changes its colour scheme so often one cant keep up. Ive never heard of a macpac fake though
Buying an ultra-light pack and then having a kilograms worth of stuff sacks seems to be a waste. Craigo, what is the combined weight of your stuff sacks for a normal trip. Are there lighter ones out there that are better to go for?
Carrying anything on the outside can be a bit dodgy. I've had walking poles strapped on the outside side straps and lost them twice (slow learner).
One time I dropped the tent poles! Luckily not long after that we stopped to camp and realized they were no longer there but my g/f recalled when she'd last seen them. I'd dropped them just after that and just before we forded the river. Phew! Now I never would carry tent poles on the outside and my walking stick collapses to a short length and can be carried inside the pack when I'm scrub bashing.
BTW, the scrub bashing is done wearing my Osprey Exos. It seems to handle this kind of punishment reasonably well.
The biggest Sea to Summit dry sack weighs 140g (35 litres), 2 litre sacks are 40g. You can go even lighter but these ones are pretty tough in my experience.

I don't think it's worth seeking a waterproof rucksack, in decent rain water's bound to come through.
A couple of dry bags for these essentials weigh very little, certainly a lightweight rucksack and a few dry bags will weigh less than 'near waterproof' rucksack.
The Ultra Sil drybags on here from Sea to Summit weight next nothing

Those do the job inside a rucksack for tramping and keep things watertight, I've some more hard wearing ones which use kayaking overnight trips when stored in hatch or deck.
@Garth. I've never weighed them. They're pretty light though (sea-to-summit). Depends on the type of trip as to how many I use and which sizes. Either way I'm pretty sure they weigh less in total than a pack cover or a pack liner, and they leave those for dead in performance. Certainly nowhere near the 1kg + extra that a (supposedly) waterproof pack would weigh.
I managed to buy a 2nd hand Osprey womens pack. Fits great and as very comfy to carry. Very adjustable so fits the boys as well. Thanks for all your advise.
