Customs charges on online tents

The title says it all really. Has anyone bought a tent online from an overseas supplier. If so, did you incur any fees on arrival into the country. What were they for. Cheers.

Dunno about aliexpress but dx.com seem to commit customs fraud on most of their packages by misdeclaring the value on the customs declaration. Was going to report them for the last one, but gunna, wudda ...
When the new system is in place on Aliexpress it will be pretty much impossible to defraud customs. Aliexpress will collect the duty and I imagine it will show as part of the purchase price.
DX works much the same as aliexpress and probably the same traders so how could you expect otherwise
Customs do not collect duty and GST on mos items if the combined value to be collected is less than $60.
$400 is the supposed trigger price. In reality, I have goods way in excess of this get through without problem. Ali Express, E-Bay, individual stores, book shops, specialist camera stores, with some extremely high price items, never been asked for additional payment for goods on entry to NZ. I think it is all a bit of a lottery really.
Why I asked this question is because a year ago I bought a digital slr and got stung. I was hoping tents would slip through easier as the average Joe doesn't consider them as valuable as electronic items like a digital slr (though they are).
Duty etc on 400 is around 60
Even if you do get caught and have to pay 60 duty on an item that cost 500 overseas but 1000 here why would you grumble
Agreed. Pity there's not a simple system for paying duty & gst on everything you bring in to the country, so we're all on the same rules, no guilt, no taxdodging, no reason for anyone to grumble

Sounds like it is.
Exchange rate is often more of an issue. If paying by credit card often the foreign currency is converted to US dollars and then to NZ dollars.
